  • Drug class: GLP-1 receptor agonist
  • Legal classification: Prescription medicine in Hong Kong

How It Works

From Appetite Regulation to Long-Term Weight Management

Wegovy® does not directly “burn fat.” Its effects are related to appetite signaling and the regulation of gastric emptying. When combined with ongoing lifestyle management, it may help suitable individuals manage their weight.

Appetite Regulation

Acts on physiological pathways involved in appetite control, helping to reduce hunger and food intake.

01 / APPETITE

Satiety

May increase feelings of fullness after meals and may delay gastric emptying. Individual responses can vary.

02 / SATIETY

Ongoing Management

Emphasizes nutrition, physical activity, and regular medical follow-up rather than focusing only on short-term changes in body weight.

03 / LONG-TERM

Clinical Evidence

Weight Changes in Clinical Research

The STEP 1 randomized clinical trial included 1,961 adults with overweight or obesity who did not have diabetes and met the study eligibility criteria. Both groups received lifestyle intervention and were followed for 68 weeks.

MEDICAL REVIEW

Personalized Safety Assessment

A doctor will consider medical and medication history, risk factors, and weight management goals when assessing suitability; BMI is not the only determining factor.

Important: The information above refers to general indications for adult weight management. Other age groups or additional indications should follow the latest Hong Kong-approved product information and a doctor’s clinical judgment. Do not self-medicate.

Safety First

Side Effects, Precautions & Medical Assessment

Prescription weight management medications are not suitable for everyone. Before assessment, patients should provide their doctor with complete information about existing medical conditions, pregnancy plans, previous allergies, and current medications.

More Common Side Effects

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal pain may occur, with individual responses varying according to tolerability.

Conditions Requiring Careful Assessment

Patients with a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, kidney problems, diabetes-related eye conditions, pregnancy, or plans to become pregnant should inform their doctor in advance.

Be Alert to Serious Symptoms

Seek medical attention promptly if persistent severe abdominal pain, a serious allergic reaction, or prolonged vomiting leading to dehydration occurs.

Prescription and Use Reminder: Do not adjust the dose yourself, use Wegovy® together with other medicines containing Semaglutide, or purchase it from unverified sources. Actual prescribing, contraindications, and monitoring should follow the applicable Hong Kong product information and your doctor’s advice.

Personalised Care

BMS Clinic’s Approach to Weight Management

We approach weight management from a whole-health perspective, with a focus on individual needs, risk identification, and ongoing assessment.

01

Initial Medical Assessment

Review of weight and health history, existing medical conditions, current medications, diet, and lifestyle habits.

02

Personalized Management Approach

A doctor will assess whether prescription medication should be considered, together with the individual’s dietary, physical activity, and overall health management needs.

03

Ongoing Follow-Up

Weight changes, tolerability, lifestyle factors, and other relevant health indicators are reviewed according to the doctor’s recommendations.

Are Wegovy® and Ozempic® the same medication?

Both contain Semaglutide, but they are different brands and products. Their approved indications, available strengths, and prescribing considerations are not exactly the same and they should not be interchanged without medical advice.

Is Wegovy® used once a week?

Official Hong Kong information indicates that Wegovy® is a once-weekly injectable medication. Whether it should be used, adjusted, or temporarily stopped should be determined by a doctor according to the individual’s circumstances.

Can everyone lose around 15% of their body weight?

No. The 14.9% figure represents the average result observed over 68 weeks in a specific population in the STEP 1 study. It does not mean that every user will achieve the same outcome.

Does Wegovy® need to be combined with diet and exercise?

Yes. Wegovy® is used as part of a weight management approach that includes reduced calorie intake, increased physical activity, and ongoing medical follow-up. It does not replace a healthy lifestyle.

Can I purchase Wegovy®, stop using it, or increase the dose on my own?

This is not recommended. Wegovy® is a prescription medication in Hong Kong, and its suitability, safe use, and ongoing management should be assessed by a doctor.
